Response from Gillian Keegan MP

Thank you for contacting me about the Gender Recognition Act 2004 and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I recognise that more must be done to help transgender people with the unique and difficult challenges that they face. Trans women are women and trans people deserve equal and fair access to healthcare, safe spaces, and opportunities, as well as to live their life with dignity.

I know that colleagues in the Government Equalities Office have been doing a lot of work on this recently to form their response to the consultation. Understandably, the Coronavirus outbreak has complicated things somewhat, but I have received reassurances from the department that they plan to publish their response in the summer. I do not wish to pre-empt the consultation response but will take the time to study the detail of it in due course.

I look forward to continuing my engagement with Chichester LGBT and to attending Chichester Pride when it’s possible after the inaugural event was postponed due to Coronavirus.

Yours sincerely,

Gillian
